Josef Mengele (1911-1978)M.D. and SS officer. In May 1943 Mengele became Medical Director of the women’s section of the extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. In this capacity he carried out a huge number of medical experiments on the prisoners. Mengele had no moral scruples about including even newborns in his cruel experiments, which almost always resulted in the death of the subjects. Mengele remained in Germany under false name until 1949, when he succeeded in escaping to Argentina. He died in 1978 in Brazil, presumably as the result of a bathing accident. Back |
