Rudolf Hess (1894-1987)Leading Nazi politician, member of the Nazi Party from 1920. In 1933 Hess was appointed Hitler’s deputy within the party and Reich Minister without Portfolio. In May 1941 Hess, without Hitler’s knowledge, flew to England to negotiate a peace treaty with the English government, but was instead imprisoned by the English. At the Nuremberg Tribunal Hess was sentenced to life in prison. He was the longest serving prisoner in the Allies’ war crimes prison in Spandau in Berlin. Hess died in 1987. Back |
